Eleven-year-old River lives on a remote mountain compound with his parents, Iris and Bear, and his older brother, Mustang. River loves his quiet life making art in the woods and playing with his dog, Medley. But when his fourteen-year-old cousin Emma and her mother arrive, River’s life turns upside down. Emma brings tales of mass evacuations and environmental contamination, and Mustang starts disappearing for long periods of time, leaving River to wonder what’s really going on beyond the compound boundaries. But it’s not just the evacuation that has Emma on the run. She and her mother have been living for years in the shadow of her abusive father, and she knows it’s only a matter of time before he finds them. Can the kids come up with a plan in time to protect themselves and their families from the imminent threats that surround them?
