A middle grade adventure novel

Coming spring 2021 from Simon & Schuster/Aladdin

A harmless scheme to host a secret sleepover with two best friends turns into a nightmarish adventure when Maddie discovers herself alone – left behind in a town that has been mysteriously evacuated and abandoned. Maddie’s parents are gone so she must learn to survive alone, comforted only by a Rottweiler named George and all the books she can read. The obvious parallels to her stepbrother’s book report on Island of the Blue Dolphins are not lost on Maddie. As months pass, she grapples with adolescence, escapes natural disasters, looters, and wild animals, inventing clever ways to survive in a town that has been mothballed and forgotten. Maddie wrestles with loneliness and the meaning of life in the face of endless solitude, but her will to survive surpasses even the most frightening experiences. Ultimately, she determines that the thesis from her stepbrother’s book report is correct: being alone is the greatest challenge of all.
